The story of Purim
Purim is a holiday filled with fun. It celebrates when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from destruction.
The story of Purim is about Esther, a beautiful, young, Jewish woman living in Persia, and her cousin Mordecai, who raised her. Esther was taken to the
house of Ahasuerus, King of Persia. When he came to love her more than
his other women he made her queen. The king did not know that Esther was a Jew.
Haman was an advisor to the king. Haman hated Mordecai because
Mordecai refused to bow down to Haman. Haman plotted to destroy all the
Jewish people. Haman told the king that the Jewish people were not
following the laws of the king. The king let Haman decide what to do
the disobedience. Haman planned to kill all of the Jews.
Mordecai persuaded Esther to speak to the king on behalf of the Jewish
people. She told him of Haman's plot against her people. The Jewish people
were saved, and Haman was hanged.
During Purim, the Book of Esther is read. It is customary to boo, stamp feet,
and rattle gregers (noisemakers) whenever the name of Haman is mentioned.
Other customs during Purim include dressing in costume, presenting plays,
and eating hamantaschen. Hamantaschen are triangular shaped, filled
cookies that are supposed to represent Haman's three-cornered hat.
